On May 24, 2017 it finally happened: DJI announced the new drone in New York City.
And we were present. Watch the video here. But we tested the drone before, so we really know what we are talking about without relying on the information of the manufacturer only.
If you were hoping for another model of the famous Phantom or Mavic series, you were wrong.
With the new drone DJI reinvented itself and made a start on another category of drones.
The smallest drone of the Chinese manufacturer offers a lot of features and sets new standards in the price range below 500€.
So let’s take a closer look at 5 of the highlights of the DJI Spark that will let the competitors literally look old.
1) The drone is small. Very small. The drone ready for takeoff is 14.5 x 14.5 x 5.4 cm and only weighs 304 gram. That breaks the record of all other models of DJI and so the DJI Spark is one of the smallest drones in the highly competitive market.
If you often go on holidays or if you love taking special selfies without much equipment, you will for sure be impressed with that drone.

2) The gimbal, the camera stabilizing system of the ultra portable DJI Spark, is phenomenal compared to all other competitors.
Finally, blurred pictures are things of the past - also in the class of cheaper drones.
But why is this the case and why is the DJI so much better than its competitors?
Most manufacturers don’t even stabilize their cameras.
But some manufacturers became inventive and attach importance to digital image stabilization.
The Yuneec Breeze, which is in the same price range, would be a good example.
However, digital image stabilization also has two big disadvantages:
First of all, the quality of the picture is massively reduced and second, the material does not look very steady in the end. DJI uses the only right system for stabilizing: A mechanic gimbal which makes the camera stand on two axes - without any wobble. And although there are only two axes (the gimbal of its big brother, the DJI Mavic Pro has three axes), the result is substantial. Compared to that, digital image stabilisation seems to be a thing from the past.

3) In respect to the size and the battery’s capacity of 1.480mAh the flying time of the small DJI Spark is remarkable. This might also let the competitors get scared.
The DJI Spark is 15 minutes airborne.
4) There are three ways to control the DJI Spark: The first one is the classic one, via remote control. Here you can reach distances up to 2km. This is more than the famous drone Yuneec Typhoon H can, while it almost costs three times more, it only reaches 1.6km. The DJI Spark can also be controlled via Smartphone, but of course the reach is limited here, the vertical extend is about 50m and in the horizontal extend the WiFi can be reached up to 80m. The third way to control the drone is via flying modes: You can take selfies by gestures.

5) Last but not least let’s come to the lens: While other drones of the same price range might sometimes wobble and also use fisheye lenses, which make the pictures look round and unnatural, DJI uses a straightened fix 25mm lens. Say goodbye to cheap action cam looks – and welcome to films and pictures that will impress.
And the faster you are, the higher your name will be in the shipping list (DJI is not known for fast shipment – however, there aren’t any alternatives since retailers will get the drones when DJI has finished the shipping process).
